CHAPTER 42
(It’s almost winter in New York. Kurt James, a ver successful business man, is home with one of his friends. They sat down on the lawn watching Ladi as he rides his little bicycle on the walkway...)
ED : I saw Lara yesterday shopping. She said you'll be leaving before christmas.
KURT : yes.
ED : she looks like she's so happy about it...
KURT : hmm…
ED : Kurt....(Looking at Kurt's expression)
KURT : yep?....(Turns his eyes from Ladi)
ED : seriously...you're still turning deaf ears to me...
KURT : about?
ED : about her. The way you two behave, it’s weird...your kind of marriage...
KURT : what about it?
ED : come on...stop acting like you don't understand what I'm talking about...you act more like you were forced into this marriage while she acts like she's the victim...
KURT : victim?
ED : yes...it’s obvious she's the one in love and suffering from this marriage.
KURT : know what, Eddy?
ED : tell me...
KURT : mind your little business and leave mine...
ED : don't you care about her? I mean, does the situation of things not bother you?
KURT : Eddy, situation or whatever you call it....is the least of my worries right now, okay....?
ED : really?
KURT : yeah...(paying little or no attention to Eddy)
ED : (takes a deep breath)…I don't know what to think?....it’s either you just want to punish this girl or you're just too busy ignoring her.
KURT : come on Ed, stop getting crazy ideas. I've got my mind on something else.
ED : something or someone else?
KURT : where exactly is this discussion leading to? Why not just drop it?....
ED : alright fine.
KURT : have you gotten in touch with those guys?
ED : yeah...I booked an appointment with them.
KURT : for when?
ED : next monday...
KURT : that's okay. I want that stuff started right away.
ED : of course it can if you are ready for it. 'Cause that stuff is gonna cost you a lot of doe, man...
KURT : I'm ready for it.
ED : getting them down there...they're gonna stay for a couple of months, you know.
KURT : whatever, I'm ready for it and I want the best of it all.
ED : alright.
(Chief Imeh, being the state chairman for his party, had called for a meeting with the party members and their gubernatorial candidate to discuss the way forward. After the meeting, he decided to meet with Andy and his campaign manager to discuss....)
IME : Andy, Elias here has brought us good news, from your supposed sponsor.
ANDY : (turns to Elias)...really?
ELIAS : yes sir. He is not only putting down a billion naira for your campaign, he has even said your campaign should be shown live on the TV station he's starting up in Lagos and Abuja. So that our indigenes over there can get to know more about you and come back home to vote.
ANDY : that's so good for us. I mean, I don't have to think of how to pay any TV station to show my campaign then...
IME : (turns to Elias)...but don't you think we may not get across enough since it’s a new TV station? I mean they are just starting...
ELIAS : no...(Shaking his head)...in fact, if you ask me sir, I'll say it’s the best. Because when a new TV station starts, believe me, the info goes out fast and people tune in very well. That's because, they already know what the old TV stations are up to. They know their programs already but when a new one comes out, people want to know what it will be all about.
IME : so that means it’s good for us then?
ELIAS : very good in fact.
ANDY : That's very nice of him. I should get to see him one of this days to thank him.
ELIAS : okay. I'll get your message across to him.
ANDY : please do that.
ELIAS : I need your account details sir, so he can send you the money.
ANDY : no problem about that. I'll send it to him. When is the TV station starting?
ELIAS : in a few months.
IME : all the same, I'll advice you still work with other TV stations too.
ANDY : is that necessary?...(Looking at both of them for an answer)
ELIAS : well, sir, I will say you should work with this one only in Lagos and Abuja, but here, being the place you are contesting, its better you work with all the TV and radio stations here.
ANDY : that's a good idea.
IME : okay...not bad.
(Susan has being married to Stan for almost two years now. They are based in Nigeria but sometimes go to L.A to stay with Stan’s father. She was home in Nigeria when she received a call from Bukola....)
SUSAN : wow! Babe where have you been!
CALLER : I'm still in the UK. I'll be coming back soon though.
SUSAN : can't wait!
CALLER : how's my baby doing?
SUSAN : very well....you should come soon before he starts calling every other person's name before calling yours.
CALLER : (laughs)....oh really...
SUSAN : yes.
CALLER : alright I will. What of Stan?
SUSAN : he’s fine....(Trying to locate Stan)....he's here somewhere. He was making a call...
CALLER : alright, I'll talk to him some other time, I have to run now...
SUSAN : okay dear....talk to you later....(Hangs up)...where's this man....(Stands up to look for Stan.)
(Meanwhile, Stan is on the phone....)
STAN : when will that be?
CALLER : very soon. But I want to put some things in place first.
STAN : alright. I'm with you all the way, just let me know where I can come in.
CALLER : alright. How's the family?
STAN : all fine....(Noticed that Susan is coming)...hmm...let's talk later, Suz is coming over...
CALLER : okay.
STAN : (hangs up and turns to his wife)...Babe...
SUSAN : (noticed he was making a call when she saw him)....Baby I was looking for you, Bukola called. She wanted to say hi....
STAN : oh really? How's she?
SUSAN : she's okay....who were you talking with?
STAN : em....(Thinking of what to say)...a business partner I met recently...he happened to be an old friend.
SUSAN : oh really? Why not invite him over for lunch?
STAN : (smiles)...em....nah, he's going to China for something.
SUSAN : oh...okay....
STAN : so, when is Bukola coming back?...(Trying to change the topic)
SUSAN : oh...soon.
STAN : that's good.
(Andy is at home on the phone with his campaign manager....)
ANDY : yes Elias how far have you gone?
CALLER : sir, I've got news from our sponsor...
ANDY : oh that's good, tell me....
CALLER : he finally wants to talk to you.
ANDY : where does he want us to meet?
CALLER : I really don't know sir. But I've given him your personal Number, he will give you a call.
ANDY : but...there's something strange about all this. Why does he not deal with me directly, why going through you?
CALLER : oh...I don't communicate with him directly too sir.
ANDY : (surprised)…haha..really?
CALLER : yes sir. I do communicate with his PA, not him. I don't know him that's why I don't know his name.
ANDY : haha....okay, but he now wants to talk to me?
CALLER : yes sir.
ANDY : better.
CALLER : so I've given them your number.
ANDY : okay....I got the one billion naira he sent to me, so I'll send you some money for the billboards.
CALLER : okay sir...I was even thinking we could make use of those billboards on those our travel roads, starting from Lagos/Ibadan express way, to shagamu/ore road to...
ANDY : (cuts in)...that's good. Find out what it will cost us before my opponent use them too.
CALLER : alright sir. I'll get back to you sir.
ANDY : alright....(Hangs up)
(Immediately after he hung up his Chairman's call comes in...)
CALLER : Andy...
ANDY : Chief...good afternoon.
CALLER : yes. How is the campaign going?
ANDY : very well. When are you coming back from your trip?
CALLER : by next week. My doctor is ill disposed for now...em...this your sponsor, have you heard from him?
ANDY : yes. He sent the money he promised.
CALLER : is that so?
ANDY : in fact I was surprised.
CALLER : I didn't take him seriously since he has been anonymous...
ANDY : I didn't too, until I saw the money has entered into my account.
CALLER : but did you not see his name there?
ANDY : oh I did. But he's not someone I've heard off.
CALLER : really?
ANDY : yes.
CALLER : you know all these silent millionaires....I'm sure he's one of them.
ANDY : possibly... Could you believe he's a yoruba man?
CALLER : haha...that's weird....what interest does he have in you then?
ANDY : I seriously don't know...but Elias said he will call me soon. He now has my number.
CALLER : oh that's good. Alright, I'll get back to you.
ANDY : okay…(he hangs up)…yes, things are falling into place quickly…
(After giving it a lot of thought and summoning a lot of courage to face what is ahead, Amode decided to visit Sam at his house. Tina was so elated to see him, she took him straight to where her brother is....)
TINA : brother, he's here...
SAM : thank you for coming sir...(Trying to sit up)
AMODE : (wishing he could avoid the stench in the room)....it’s okay, you don't have to sit up....so tell me what you know about Teluwo's death…(covering his nose)
SAM : it all started that day, I was cleaning the room after they had carried his dead body away. I saw a camera inside the wardrobe. I picked it up and took it home, hoping I can sell it. Then, I tried to put it on...that was when I saw the former minister of petroleum and his friend arguing. I kept watching the argument and before I know it, the Minister brought out a knife and stabbed his friend at the back. While his friend was writhing in pain he laughed at him, waited for him to die and then used the hotel phone to make a call. I'm sure you were the one he called because some minutes later you showed up, but he left before you came in....(Beckons on Tina to bring the tape recorder.)
AMODE : is that possible?
TINA : here it is…(handing it over to Amode)
(On seeing the tape recorder he examines it and remembers Teluwo owned a similar one years ago…)
AMODE : oh my God....so there was a recording?...(thinks for a while)…does it mean Teluwo had suspected Andy was going to kill him...? or who else would have put this inside the wardrope?
(Then Tina brings a little memory card out, puts it in another camcorder and plays it for Amode)
SAM : I have copied and transferred several times before it go into that little thing. And I have so many copies.
AMODE : (Turns to Sam after watching it)...then why didn't you bring it and show them in court?
SAM : (takes a deep breath)...because I was selfish....I knew if I brought it to court, it won't fetch me money but I can use it to get money some other way....
AMODE : how?
SAM : I have been using it to collect money from Andy Silva...
AMODE : (cuts in)…you've been blackmailing him! Instead of bringing the tape out to show everybody the truth?!
SAM : I'm...I'm sorry...sir.
AMODE : and I ended up spending over fifteen years in prison for a crime I did not commit, I missed been a father to my only son ...all because you wanted money?
SAM : please....you have to forgive me....
AMODE : (shaking his head)....I just can't believe this...
SAM : please forgive me so I can die in peace, I've been praying for death but it has not come....this pain is too much....
TINA : Uncle please forgive him...we have been on this for some time now. Even his wife couldn't stay with him. She left almost immediately he started smelling...
AMODE : may God forgive you...
(Amode left Sam's house in anger. On getting home, he met another man waiting for him.)
(Bibi is an event planner. She has been known for organizing big events, bringing out her client's every desire for their event, this is why she was made the social secretary for the Old Students Association of Atlantic College (OSAAC).
Her office is situated in the heart of the city on the seventh floor of the Hibrid Towers on the Island.
She had just entered into her office when her secretary puts a call through to her telling her she has a caller on the line. She was connected immediately...)
BIBI : hello? Who am I speaking with please?
CALLER : this is Mr. Kola Olafioye. I'm calling on behalf of my Boss. He's one of the Old students of Atlantic College.
BIBI : oh really? Who could that be?
CALLER : I'm not sure you'll know him.
BIBI : tell me his name first and I'll tell you if I do.
CALLER : are you saying you know all your old students?
BIBI : oh...that's true, if he's not between 2001 and 2003 set he should not bother, 'cause those are the set merged together.
CALLER : can I ask you a question Miss?
BIBI : go on...
CALLER : what of those who left your school when you were in JSS3, are they not part of your old students?
BIBI : well they are...
CALLER : and will you know them all?
BIBI : em, I don't think I will because I joined the school when I was in SS1.
CALLER : oh....you see...
BIBI : so you can't give me a name, I'm sure those that started from JSS1 will know him or her?
CALLER : don't worry Ma'am, you'll get to know that as time goes on. Anyway, he was informed that the school will be celebrating its silver jubilee this year...
BIBI : that's true.
CALLER : and you are the social sec for the old students association.
BIBI : yes.
CALLER : you're responsible for planning the yearly reunion, right?
BIBI : since last year, yes.
CALLER : okay. Humm...what is the program usually like?
BIBI : did you not say your Boss is one of us? Then he should know how it’s done...
CALLER : actually, he's never really been into the program. He's only been there once or twice and doesn't know how the program is being funded....
BIBI : hmm....I guess he's busy going to that of his other school...
CALLER : oh well...possibly. Anyway, he wants to solely fund this year's reunion. That's why he asked me to call you...
BIBI : did you say solely?
CALLER : yes.
BIBI : let me understand you, 'cause the school has its program...
CALLER : yes I know that. We were hinted by the school. Suffice me to say, it was the school that told us you are the one organizing that of your set.
BIBI : oh...okay....well, usually, the reunion is always organized and funded by the old students themselves, but if he is saying he wants to fund it single-handedly, then he should know that it will cost a lot.
CALLER : hmm...can you give us an estimate?
BIBI : okay. Send me your email address and I'll send it to you.
CALLER : one other thing...
BIBI : okay...
CALLER : your set will be having theirs separately.
BIBI : sorry, are you telling me or asking me?
CALLER : let’s say I’m telling you how the program will go…
BIBI : (surprised)....wait a minute, I think you’re getting it all wrong here. Look it’s not for your Boss to say.
CALLER : come on ma’am, don’t get worked up. He just wanna make things easy for you…(using his American accent)…and possibly, get acquainted with his very old friends alone.
BIBI : (chuckles)....okay. But the decision is not for me only to take. I'll tell the Excos. Then get back to you.
CALLER : alright. I’ll send my email addy to you and I'll also send you details of some possible locations for the reunion.
BIBI : hey! (hold it there)…location how? Are you the one that will be picking a location for us? I mean what if we won't like it? What if...
CALLER : (cuts in)...oh come on Miss....I know the kind of location you have been using before now and trust me, the options I'm gonna give you are far better than the previous ones, trust me....imagine using Da Cassle's rooftop....have you been there before?
BIBI : Da Cassle’s?!...(laughs uncontrollably)....oh please...DaCassles?!...(Still laughing).... that's impossible.... only politicians governors, ministers and the likes are allowed there....or better still, can afford that kind of....
CALLER : (cuts in)...Miss...
BIBI : Mister…
CALLER : do your thing and I'll do mine, okay?
BIBI : alright....
CALLER : have yourself a wonderful day…(he hangs up)
BIBI :(Hangs up and starts laughing again)...I'm sure this guy doesn't know what he's saying...Da Cassle?....impossible. I’m sure he’s just bluffing.
(Andy is in his study, on the phone with his Chairman....)
ANDY : hello Chief...
RECEIVER : how is it going?
ANDY : in fact Chief, its thanks to the sponsor, I'm not feeling the heavy burden of this campaign. If not, I don't know what I would have done. That Bastard that took my money is making things difficult for me. The money I had to pay for broadcasting alone is killing!
RECEIVER : don't worry, once you become the governor, you can do whatever you like, without being afraid of anything.
ANDY : but of course. The immunity will be my saviour even if anything happens.
RECEIVER : yes, that's why you just have to hold on. Once you attain that position, all your accusers will have to keep shut till further notice.
ANDY : in fact, I'm so impatient...I can't wait to get all my money back.
RECEIVER : don't worry, it’s almost here...
To be continued.....
