CHAPTER 39
(Mrs. Silvia Silva's mind was not at rest since the day Andrew came back with the bad news. She kept disturbing her husband about it...)
SILVIA : Andy, what are you doing about Andrew's visa? It’s over a week now...
ANDY : what else can I do? It’s being processed. And stop whining! I've got enough things to think about!
SILVIA : like your campaign for example? Is that more important than our son?
ANDY : you sound like you don't want to be the first lady of our state?
SILVIA : well...it’s not like I don't want it, but my son comes first....wait a minute what's going on with the campaign?
ANDY : the governor leaves in the next two years but I have to start campaign soon.
SILVIA : but are you sure he will not be re-elected for second term?
ANDY : I pray not. If not, I'll end up wasting a lot of money for this campaign.
SILVIA : why don't you just wait till after his second term then?
ANDY : what if someone else now gets elected instead? That means I'll have to wait another 6 years? Hell no!
SILVIA : okay, suit yourself...anyway I just thought of something...
ANDY : what?
SILVIA : since Andy is a UK citizen, let him go there first...
ANDY : but you know I've rented out the apartment we had there, where will he stay?
SILVIA : he should stay with your sister for the meantime, then when his Visa is ready, he can go to the US.
ANDY : hmm...
SILVIA : look, I can't allow my son to go jail o.
ANDY : he can't go to jail.
SILVIA : I won't be sure of that till he leaves this country.
ANDY : his being here is also dangerous for my political career...Okay, let him leave for the UK immediately. I'll get him a ticket as soon as possible....just call the agency, there may be someone selling his or her ticket. He can leave tomorrow or next...
SILVIA : better!
(Andrew's parents were able to get him a seat on a British Airways. He left the following day.)
Stan got to the J K Kennedy airport. He takes a cab straight to his parents place.
Sandra had being ill for some time now, undergoing treatment in the US. Her husband has been so concerned about her, he does not want to lose her like he lost Carol, so he made her have a change of environment.
Stanley has not seen his parents for about a year now. After he finished his masters at the Northern Illinois University in Chicago, Illinois, he came straight to Nigeria. Now that he's returning, he's very glad, seeing his parents again.
They had dinner after which Stanley told Jacobs they need to talk...)
JACOBS : what about, Stan?
STAN : Dad, there's something you have to see....(Going into his room to get the CD from his bag. He brings it back...)
JACOBS : what is that about?
STAN : you'll get to find out Dad...(Putting on his laptop)...Dad, how would you feel if you get to know that you were so wrong about Carol's murderer?
JACOBS : that I've kept the wrong person behind bars for five years?...I won't like that...but could I have been wrong?...(Looking at Stan seriously)
STAN : you were Dad...
JACOBS : (shocked)....what do you mean by that? That I've been wrong all this while?
STAN : no Dad. Don't get me wrong...(Trying to run the laptop)...what I'm saying is that, you'd just lost your daughter then, I mean you must have been in shock seeing her dead....(Sits up)...look at it this way Dad, you heard your daughter was missing and you came up to search for her....you definitely weren't expecting to see her dead. Seeing her body there, you know, the psychological trauma and the anger. You were hurt and the first thing you wanna do is strangle whoever was responsible for it, so, its normal for your anger to cloud your sense of reasoning at that moment, that's why you reacted the way you did.
JACOBS : so what are you getting at?
STAN : Dad, the same guy that raped and killed Carol is still out there, as a matter of fact he raped another girl again.
JACOBS : (surprised)...where did you get all this?
STAN : Dad, my girlfriend, Susan, remember I brought her here before I left for the US?
JACOBS : yes.
STAN : do you know she was Carol's best friend.
JACOBS : no wonder, your Mum said she looks familiar...
STAN : yes. And they went to the same school. So she knew the boy you indicted...she told me the kind of person he is and so we decided to conduct an investigation, kind of...especially when she showed me the guy they suspected to have killed Carol...what happened was that, the party guests that day, were mostly their schoolmates, so they said Carol was last seen with the minister's son...
JACOBS : (cuts in)...the minister's son?
STAN : yes...
JACOBS : okay, continue…
STAN : So in this recording I want to show you, is the minister's son and his friend...(Turning the face of the laptop to him)
(Jacobs picks up his glasses as he sits up to look at the laptop. He quietly listens to everything discussed and looks at his son...)
JACOBS : oh my God...I was totally wrong....I blamed the wrong person!
STAN : Dad, that's not all.
JACOBS : tell me...
STAN : when I went to the prison to see this guy, I met one Barrister Charles, he said he was the one...
JACOBS : (cuts in)...he was the Attorney I got for the case against that......innocent boy....
STAN : He came to see Jide, that's the boy in Jail. He came with three other lawyers to help him....
JACOBS : oh really...(Surprised)...has he seen this?
STAN : oh no, he just believes that Jide is innocent, probably because he had conducted some investigation. Anyway, I told him about this CD and he came to get a copy later on...
JACOBS : hmm...
STAN : When he came to get this CD from me, he told me how he had investigated and found out that Jide was innocent...
JACOBS : (cuts in)...why didn't he tell me then?
STAN : well, he said you were nowhere to be found or something like that....
JACOBS : (becomes dumbfounded)...em..... that's true...
STAN : he said he had a possible evidence with him, and wanted to get more but needed your approval, but you took him off the case....
JACOBS : hmm...that was because I listened to your mother...(Remembers something)...wait a minute!...did you just say this boy is the minister's son?
STAN : yes. The same boy that organized the party.
JACOBS : now I understand everything...(Stands up and walks slowing towards Carol's portrait in the sitting room)....but do you think he knows what his son did!
STAN : who?
JACOBS : Andy Silva.
STAN : I don't know about that...
JACOBS : because, I can remember he came to talk to me and your mother, telling us not to start up the case in court just yet. Till the boy is of age....
STAN : but why did he say that? I mean, of what benefit is that to him?
JACOBS : (turns to Stan)...I'm not so sure though...but do you think he knows?
STAN : let's talk to the lawyer, he may know something...
JACOBS : that's true...but I don't have his number anymore.
STAN : I do...(Going to get his phone)...
(They put a call through to Charles...)
STAN : hello Barrister?
RECEIVER : hello, who am I speaking with please?
STAN : this is Stan Achibong sir...
RECEIVER : oh hello? How was your trip? Sure you've landed already...
STAN : yes sir. My trip was cool...em...I've told my Dad everything. He's here, he wants to speak to you.
RECEIVER : oh...okay...
(Stan gives the phone to Jacobs)
JACOBS : hello Charles...
RECEIVER : hello sir. How have you been?
JACOBS : very well thanks....em...Stan told me all about that boy's case... I'm really sorry about what happened the other time...
RECEIVER : it’s okay sir. The most important thing is that the truth is out now, so all we need to do is to help that boy out of that place as soon as we can.
JACOBS : that's true....em....something came to mind just now and I want to find out.
RECEIVER : what's that sir?
JACOBS : ....that man, Andy Silva....
RECEIVER : yes...
JACOBS : do you think he's aware that it was his son that killed my daughter?
RECEIVER : of course...
JACOBS : (shocked)... are you sure?
RECEIVER : very sure sir...in fact I have the evidence and the witnesses to prove that...
JACOBS : damn that bastard!
RECEIVER : sir, Andy Silva knew the boy's lawyer had an Evidence against his son, so he paid them in order to get rid of it.
JACOBS : what?!
RECEIVER : yes. Remember Carol's shoe?
JACOBS : yes, the one we didn't get back...
RECEIVER : exactly. It had the real culprit’s blood stain. When I went back for it, I was told the boy's lawyer had collected it...
JACOBS : yes I remember that.
RECEIVER : yes. Andy Silva later got in touch with them, because they had seen the wound on Andrew's left shoulder. The lawyer knew it was Andy Silva's son that did it. So he called them up, telling them to bring the shoe for a whooping twenty million naira each.
JACOBS : that son of a bitch! Do you know he came to me, telling me not to do the case just yet? He said we should wait till the boy is eighteen.
RECEIVER : that's because he was buying time. He wanted you to do the case at a time it will be difficult to prove that it was his son that did it.
JACOBS : he's such a bastard! He even advised us against doing the semen test...
RECEIVER : you see...look sir, Andy Silva is a criminal. If only you know all the atrocities he has committed.
JACOBS : damn him....his son must pay for what he did!
RECEIVER : he sure will.
JACOBS : please, let me know everything about the case. If there's anything you want me to do.
RECEIVER : alright sir.
(By the time Lekan and Charles made the attempt to arrest Andrew, he had fled to the UK. When the police informed them that Andrew Silva was nowhere to be found, they were furious....)
CHARLES : damn it!....what do we do now?
LEKAN : in fact my hands are tied...
CHARLES : and Mr. Achibong told me to get things done and let him know...
LEKAN : (cuts in)...then call him and tell him...I won't want us to do the case now, it’s not conducive enough.... and we definitely can't leave Jide there either.
CHARLES : that's true...(Pacing)...
LEKAN : if we decide to do the case now, yes, Jide will be freed but you know how these influential people can be...they will one way or the other maneuver their way, they can say that Andrew is dead or something.... and then he will come back a free man after some years, and then no one will be able to say anything again...
CHARLES : except he commits another crime...
LEKAN : and he gets caught...don't forget that...
CHARLES : that's true...if he doesn't get caught, the charade continues...
LEKAN : hmm....maybe you should call Mr. Achibong...
CHARLES : okay, I'll do that...(brings out his phone and dials Jacobs number)....hello?
RECEIVER : hello, Charles...
CHARLES : hello sir, how's the family over there?
RECEIVER : very well thanks. How is the case going?
CHARLES : actually that's why I called you sir.
RECEIVER : tell me...
CHARLES : sir, before we were able to arrest the culprit, he had absconded sir...
RECEIVER : damn it!
CHARLES : I'm sure his parents had sent him out of the country...
RECEIVER : I see.....but that shouldn't stop the case...
CHARLES : sir, it’s not good we do the case now. Neither can we just leave that boy there knowing he's innocent sir...
RECEIVER : why can't you do the case now?
CHARLES : because the culprit is not available. Sir, if we do the case now, fine, Jide will be freed but Andrew may never be indicted.
RECEIVER : why?
CHARLES : because in this country the judiciary is highly influenced by these politicians, even though it shouldn't be. If Jide is freed and Andrew is nowhere to be found, if he doesn't come back after some years, the case will be forgotten, Andrew will go unpunished.
RECEIVER : hmm....so what do you advice we do?
CHARLES : that's the problem now sir...should we go ahead and leave Andrew just like that? Or do the case later when he comes back? But then what will happen to Jide? He is innocent.
RECEIVER : (thinks for a while)...what if he gets a state pardon?
CHARLES : hmm....that is a good one too but he's only about five years, I'm not sure he will be enlisted.
RECEIVER : leave that to me...what I want to know is if it’s a good option?
CHARLES : it is a very good option sir...(Smiles at Lekan who is anxious to know what's going on)
RECEIVER : alright then you will hear from me very soon.
CHARLES : okay sir. Thank you sir.
RECEIVER : bye...
CHARLES : bye sir....(Hangs up)...yes!
LEKAN : tell me what happened?
CHARLES : if all things work well, Jide will be enlisted for state pardon!
LEKAN : but how?
CHARLES : (sits up)...see, Mr. Achibong is the governor's very good friend and Brother in-law...
LEKAN : haha, how do you know?
CHARLES : It was the governor's wife's brother, that introduced me to him to handle Carol's case then. But you know he wasn't the governor then, he's just about a year there, remember?
LEKAN : that's true...but he's a yoruba man and I thought his wife is yoruba too?
CHARLES : yes, his wife's mother is from Akwa-Ibom related to Mr Achibong, that's one, two, the governor got to marry his wife because Mr. Achibong match-made them...
LEKAN : oooohhh....
CHARLES : I heard they went to St. fimbers College and then Unilag together so they are really close.
LEKAN : hmm....so now he will tell him to enlist Jide in the list...
CHARLES : exactly....
LEKAN : that way, we can bring up the case again when Andrew gets back to Nigeria...
CHARLES : yes.
LEKAN : what if he doesn't come back?
CHARLES : (laughs)...you really think he won't come back someday?
LEKAN : I know he will, but it may be too late or the case may have been forgotten...
CHARLES : I doubt that...
LEKAN : okay...at least I'm relieved Jide will be out...
CHARLES : that is the most important aspect.
LEKAN : yes.
CHARLES : so we just have to wait...
(Few months later, some prisoners were enlisted to have been given state pardon. Jide's name was part of them.
Lekan and Charles went to the prison to get him out.
As Jide takes his first step out of the prison gates, he sees Charles and Lekan waiting for him ahead. He looks back at the gate and says to himself...)
JIDE : hmm....out finally...for all of you that kept me here, made me lose my parents, lose my scholarship....(Chuckles)....you'll get to know that this is a different Jide.... I'm coming for you all...
To be continued....
(Mrs. Silvia Silva's mind was not at rest since the day Andrew came back with the bad news. She kept disturbing her husband about it...)
