THE ROAD AHEAD (CHAPTER 36b)
(Few days later, after noticing Jide's countenance, Amode decides to have a chat with Jide too. Jide had refused to come for food for some days. He kept to himself and refused to mingle with or help others as he usually does.
Amode started searching for him. He checked where he usually does his study but did not find him there. After searching for hours, he later found him sitting on a heap of grass behind the prison's toilet, the place Jide detests the most due the stench emanating from the toilet...)
AMODE : this is where you are Jide, with this stench....(sitting on the suckaway)...son, I may not totally know how you feel because I was never in this predicament when I was your age, but you have to be a man. Don't allow all this to make you hopeless.
JIDE : (looks at Amode)...Hope? You think I still have hope?
AMODE : yes I do. For the fact that you have not been sentenced, I believe you still have hope.
JIDE : sir...
AMODE : yes?
JIDE : you said I still have hope because I have not been sentenced...you know what? I wish they can sentence me to death so that I can be with my parents...
AMODE : (cuts in)..look, son...someone like you talking of death is foolishness, when I, as old as I am, don't pray for death even though it may come at any time...you know what?...that story I haven't told you, I'll tell you today.
JIDE : (paying more attention to Amode)...okay.
AMODE : you know why?
JIDE : why?
AMODE : (tears welled up in his eyes)....because even though I don't want to die, I still don't know what will kill me yet...the thought of my life in jail for a crime I did not commit or the havoc my son is causing out there, all because I was sentenced to jail....(takes a deep breath)...some years ago, me and two of my friends decided to go into politics, we were still quite young than so we joined a political party. After about eight years of being in that party, they wanted to compensate us for our efforts, but the positions available were limited. Only two of us will be taken. Due to my qualification, Teluwo was going to be made a minister, while I will be an adviser to the president because my qualification is not up to his. Andy was to wait till the next election before he is compensated....(Pauses)....that faithful day Andy called me that Teluwo wanted to see me urgently at his guest house. It was quite late at night though, but I still went anyway because he sounded so urgent. When I got there, I saw him stabbed from behind, I removed the knife wishing I could relieve him from the pain and save him, but I was too late. If only I had not held the knife with my bare hands.....anyway, he died and I was blamed for it. During the court hearing, a letter was read out, supposedly written by Teluwo before he died, saying I have been trying to kill him because I didn't like the position they wanted to give me....
JIDE : is that true?
AMODE : never....I was even happy they were offering to make me an adviser. I never had anything against him. I was surprised to hear them read out that piece.
JIDE : Andy Silva definitely knows something about it...
AMODE : yes. That was why he called me...he managed to remove me and Teluwo from the scene.
JIDE : and so they made him the minister?
AMODE : not until after the next election..
JIDE : hmm....so it was all in vain...
AMODE : I tell you....Andy is a cunning man. A man who would commit atrocities and make others pay for it.
JIDE : just like his son...
AMODE : like father, like son...
JIDE : I've learnt a lot in this place...I've seen people who are here because of others, either because they were framed or they were paid to do another person's jail term. Though, some are really guilty and have deteriorated for spending years here...(Pauses for a while)...coming to your son sir....(Looks at Amode)...
AMODE : Januri is the bag of problem God has decided to give to me in jail. As if it’s not enough to be paying for a crime I did not commit.
JIDE : take it easy sir...(Not knowing how to stop the old man from crying)
AMODE : I know you have so many questions to ask me....(Looking at Jide)...that was really my son. He has been an armed robber for some time now. Ever since they locked me up here, he vowed to take vengeance the wrong way...
JIDE : afflicting the innocent...
AMODE : (shaking his head)....I tried all I could to stop him...but...he said the society deprived him of his father and of the affluence he was used to...
JIDE : is he the only one you have?
AMODE : (takes a deep breath)....at first, my wife kept getting pregnant and having miscarriages, until she later started giving birth...but the babies kept dying until we had Januri. She died after giving birth to him and I was left alone to take care of him. He was still quite young when I was sentenced to jail so he was taken to the social welfare...he became bitter afterwards and that's why he's doing all these...
JIDE : but he's making the wrong set of people pay for it.
AMODE : I told him....but he kept saying he has to make someone pay, since he can't get to make the real culprit do so....
JIDE : hmm....
AMODE : I wish there was something I could do to stop him.....but I'm here...what can I do?....
JIDE : they also deprived me of my father...
AMODE : no...please don't harbor vengeance in your heart...
JIDE : (chuckles)....sir, I don't blame your son....(Stands up, backing the old man)...though he is taking out his vengeance the wrong way....those people....(Looks around)...these people.... have filled my heart with nothing but vengeance...
AMODE : no....don't...
JIDE : (cuts in)...no sir.....I'm sorry but I will have to decline....I lost my father because of it....now I've lost my mother too. At first, I didn't see her for over six months.....I didn't know what had happened to her, I now I got the news that she's dead ....and you tell me not to revenge!....(scoffs)....no. I'm not the same Jide that was brought to this prison five years ago.....
AMODE : son....don't be like my son who is out there destroying lives....please...
JIDE : (cuts in)...I won't do that....I won't punish an innocent person. But all those that put me here will surely pay!
AMODE : vengeance is the Lord's...
JIDE : (laughs)...the Lord's vengeance is coming too late for me....even if it’s the last thing I do, I will make them pay...This is a different Jide!
(Nike Alesh still did not take her daughter's illness seriously. She went to the hospital with Toyin, but did not go back to collect the test result till the following weekend.
Her husband was home when she was returning from the hospital with Toyin, beating her up as they enter into the house...)
MRS ALESH : wait till your father hears this! You're so dead!
TOYIN : Mum please let me explain...
MRS ALESH : explain what? How you got pregnant at this age?
TOYIN : Mummy, it wasn't intentional...
MRS ALESH : indeed!...
(Her husband heard them and comes out of his room to intervene in the matter...)
MR ALESH : what is going on here?
MRS ALESH : : it’s your daughter o.
MR ALESH : what happened? Why are you beating her up, knowing she's sick?
MRS ALESH : hmm she's sick indeed! Your daughter is pregnant!
MR ALESH : (shocked)...what...(Turns to Toyin)...tell me it’s not true....
MRS ALESH : it’s is very true!...here's the result of the test the doctor conducted on her...(Stretching out a paper to him)
MR ALESH : (collecting the paper, he looks at it)....oh my God!...Toyin!...why? Why have you done this?
TOYIN : Daddy no, I didn't do...
MRS ALESH : (cuts in)...what do you mean by 'you didn't do?
TOYIN : I...I was raped....
MR ALESH : (shocked)...what!
MRS ALESH : what did you just say?..(Calming down)....
MR ALESH : (furious)...you were raped! Who the hell raped you? Who was the bastard that did that to you?
MRS ALESH : honey calm down, are we sure she's saying the truth?
MR ALESH : Toyin, are you sure?
TOYIN : yes Daddy.... I never had sex till this person raped me...(Crying)
MRS ALESH : then why didn't you talk since all these days?
(Toyin didn't say anything but kept crying)
MR ALESH : I said who did it?
TOYIN : it’s one guy like that....
MRS ALESH : the boy does not have name?
MR ALESH : (swivels towards his wife)...woman! Will you calm down and let's hear what really happened to her!
MRS ALESH : okay o...
MR ALESH : Toyin, calm down and tell me exactly what happened...
TOYIN : he...he was my friend and I went to visit him...(Crying)...so...he drugged my drink and raped me...it was when I woke up I knew.
MR ALESH : (out of anger, he hits the center table with his leg)...damn it!....
MRS ALESH : you see! That's why I never wanted her to stay in the hostel in the first place! If she had stayed at home, all these wouldn't have happened... we sent you to school to go and read, you ended up visiting men abi?
MR ALESH : (turns to his wife)...so we should be crying over slipped milk?...(Hisses and turns to his daughter)...Toyin, who was the boy, tell me...
TOYIN : it’s one of the minister's son.
MR ALESH : minister? Which of them?
TOYIN : minister for Petroleum and Gas, his name is Andrew Silva.
MR ALESH : what!
MRS ALESH : oh...okay...(Sarcastically)....
(Lekan has resigned to fate, thinking Bolu too is dead since he did not hear anything from the kidnappers again. He decided to deep himself into his job in order to forget about all that has happened to him.
He changed his office address and also moved away from his residence to another part of the city.
Lately, the story he heard about Jide seem not to have eluded him. He decided to visit Charles, so has to hear the full story.
He called up Kanmi who is still in the city telling him to meet him up at Charles’ office to talk...)
LEKAN : so, I want to hear all about this boy. Let's see how we can help him.
CHARLES : it’s such a pathetic story, I tell you.
LEKAN : please tell me...
CHARLES : (turns to Sukanmi)…why don't you start and then I'll continued where ever you stop.
SK : what happen was that his mother came to me to help her son saying he's innocent and so I went to interview the boy. He said he was going to throw some garbage away when he saw the minister's son and his friend calling out to him to help. Turns out the other boy is the chief justice's son.
LEKAN : really?
SK : yes. He called the Jide boy to come help the minister's son, saying he had gotten himself wounded or so, being the cook's son he had to help. When he got there I guess he passed out and woke up when they revive him. That was when, according to him, he saw the girl's dead body right beside him with the other party guests staring at him.
LEKAN : party?
CHARLES : yeah the minister's son had organized a party.
LEKAN : oh...so, wait what was the cook's son doing at the party?
CHARLES : he came to help his Mum.
LEKAN : okay....and the girl?
CHARLES : her father was my client.
LEKAN : (turns to Charles) so, what happened with the case?
CHARLES : well, my client took me off the case just when I'd done my investigation. All I just needed was the proof that it wasn't Jide that committed the crime. The boy told me that the minister's son had tried to rape one of their employees' daughters before. And guess what? I investigated and saw that it was true. I went to his secondary school and was told that the Jide boy is such a good boy. What's more, rumor had it that the girl was last seen with the minnister's son before they started searching for the girl....
LEKAN : wait, you're getting me all confused here Charles. How did the school get to know all that?
CHARLES : they all went to the same secondary school.
LEKAN : how come? The minister sponsored the cook's son in the same secondary school as his son?
CHARLES : no. The boy was brilliant. He had a scholarship because he won the spelling bee.
LEKAN : oh...
CHARLES : yes.
LEKAN : so the boy still went to jail with all your findings?
CHARLES : well...it wasn't my case. The girl's father wanted to do things his way.
LEKAN : hmm...which school did you say they went to?
CHARLES : atlantic college...
LEKAN : wow really!
CHARLES : yes.
LEKAN : that's one of the most expensive schools in this country.
CHARLES : I tell you....not only that, he did a competition in the UK and got another scholarship there. A full one at the Manchester university....but he lost it because of a crime I'm sure he did not commit.
LEKAN : oh my God, you mean he’s a boy that’s got such a bright future and you people messed up his life...I really want to see this boy.
SK : I want to see him too. I need to ask for his forgiveness.
LEKAN : indeed...(giving Kanmi a stern look)
CHARLES : I'll find out where he was transferred and then we can go visit him.
LEKAN : wait, you guys didn't tell me how the shoe came in...
SK : Tade was the one that noticed the blood stain on the shoe and called my attention to it. We noticed that there was a blood stain on it and the stain couldn't have been the girl's, because of its position. Luckily for us, we went to the minister's house and saw his son with a wounded left shoulder....and with the parent's behavior, it was obvious they were hiding him. They didn't want us to see the wound on him...
LEKAN : but how are you sure it was through the shoe?
SK : after suspecting, we threw a bait which caught perfectly.
LEKAN : that means he was the rapist and the girl must have hit him with...(Wondering the type of shoe that can inflict such an injury)...what kind of shoe are we talking about exactly?
CHARLES : it’s a pencil heeled pencil or what do they call it...
LEKAN : pencil, that is it...but again that's provided the girl is not left-handed....
CHARLES : that I was unable to confirm...but for the fact that the minister paid them for the shoe....
LEKAN : that means it was his son that did it.
CHARLES : exactly!
LEKAN : that bastard! We should bring up the case again.
CHARLES : yes, but we may need more evidences...
LEKAN : hmm...that's true...but let's see the boy first.
CHARLES : I'll get back to you on that.
(As they were still talking, Sukanmi's phone rings and he picks it up...)
SK : hello?
CALLER : SK, I'm in serious trouble. You need to come here immediately.
SK : what happened?
CALLER : Toyin is pregnant.
SK : what! Pregnant? How? I mean...
CALLER : (cuts in)...that bastard raped and got my daughter pregnant!
SK : my God! Rape? Who raped her?
CALLER : that son of a bitch, the boy that raped and killed that girl of the other day...
SK : (sitting up)...who are you talking about?
CALLER : that minister's son, Andrew.
SK : (he looks at Charles and Lekan)....I'm coming over immediately...(Standing up, he hangs up)
LEKAN : what happened?
SK : Bro Lekan, we have to go together.
LEKAN : what happened?
SK : That boy has raped another girl again and she is pregnant.
LEKAN : who?
SK : Tade's only daughter!
